Blog 1. Big foot, little foot – 29th April 2016
Charles Darwin’s golden rule was to always pay special attention to material that
challenges one of your beliefs. My belief was I was an environmentalist. However,
when I measured my ecological footprint in 2012, I discovered I wasn’t. If everyone
lived like me, we would need 5.7 planets to support humanity.
Over the next two years I slowly chipped my footprint down to 2.1 planets. Then I
met David Attenborough. He told me to get my act together. For the last 16 months,
my footprint has been 0.8 of a planet, which is the same as the average Indian. It
feels wonderful. Finally I have got the monkey off my back. I was on a panel of the
Tasmanian Eco Film Festival and the lovely organiser Kyia said that she wanted to
measure her footprint. Is she serious? Over the next 6 months we will find out.
Good luck Kyia.
